Movies Like Under The Silver Lake - promotional movie picture

Mulholland Drive is another 2001 neo-noir psychological thriller film and this movie is about an aspiring actress who moves to Los Angeles, only to be drawn into a web of intrigue and deceit.

The film starts with Betty Elms, an aspiring actress from Canada, arriving in Los Angeles. She meets Rita, an amnesiac who is under the care of Dr Adam Kesher, at a hospital on the outskirts of town. Betty takes Rita home with her and they become friends while Betty tries to help Rita recover her memory.

Rita’s memory returns after seeing the blue key in Betty’s handbag that matches one found near where Rita was found unconscious after being hit by a car on Mulholland Drive. She remembers that she was once Camilla Rhodes, the wife of Adam Kesher’s business partner, Tony Rhodes. We think it is a beautiful storyline.

Blow Out (1981)

A cult classic, Blow Out is a 1981 American psychological thriller film written and directed by Brian De Palma. The film stars John Travolta as Jack Terry, a sound effects editor who believes he has recorded the murder of a presidential candidate.

When out recording sound effects for a horror movie Jack witnesses a car crashing into the lake. He manages to rescue the passenger Sally (Nancy Allen) however the driver is killed. Jack later discovers that the driver was in fact Governor and Presidential candidate George McRyan and Sally was hired by him to be his escort.

Listening back to the audio of that night, Jack is convinced that he can hear a gunshot meaning the car going into the lake was not an accident caused by a tyre blowing out, but by McRyan being assassinated.

This is one of Travolta’s best performances in a classic ‘wrong place, wrong time’ thriller that has him unwittingly stumbling on a world of conspiracy and blackmail.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable film that doesn’t take itself too seriously (despite the dark plot) and has some brilliant, funny performances. Watch it, it’s a lot of fun.
