A woman so beautiful that’s it’s hard to look away, Chasten has proven time and time again that she is a powerhouse in the acting world. Her latest role, as televangelist Tammy Faye is sweeping the boards – and not just for that prosthetic chin either. Jessica also recently blew audiences away, alongside longtime pal Oscar Isaac, in Scenes from a Marriage for HBO. Is there nothing this woman can’t do?
Jean Smart is the kind of badass who I’d like to be when I grow up…she has come into her own in the past few years with standout roles in Watchmen, Mare of Eastown and now, Hacks, for which she is getting nominated art every turn. Funny, beautiful, razor-sharp and supremely talented – give this woman all the gongs!
Her powerful performance in The Help brought Aunjanue to international attention, and now she’s Oscar-nominated for her role in King Richard. The story of how Venus and Serena Williams became the world-changing household names they are, driven by their Father, and supported by their Mother, (played by Aunjanue). Prepare to shed many tears at this one. Even the trailer had me in floods.
If you’ve seen Dopesick (on Disney+) then you don’t need me to tell you how astounding this performance is. Keaton reminds us why he was once at the dizzying heights of being Batman – his presence on screen is magnetic as this simple country Doctor who goes on an incredible and heartbreaking journey. A must-watch turn from this international treasure.
He’s had some snarky press recently, but I am TEAM STRONG. A working-class actor who dedicated everything he had to his career, he has finally found the perfect role in Kendall Roy – insecure, intense and twitchy with a side order of deep, deep sadness. Is it weird if I admit I find it all quite sexy? Succession wouldn’t work without all of its perfectly crafted parts – and he is an integral one.
Turns out, it is still the Willenium, when it comes to Mr Smith’s career. He shows no signs of slowing down post-50 and basically looks the same as he did in the 90s. Magic! His turn in King Richard, (which he also produced) has got all of the voters ticking his box, and rightly so. The Fresh Prince sure is a King… let’s bow down.
So whether it’s film or TV which you favour, you can find a stand-out performance on your screens without looking very far at all. These are just some of my favourites – I also adored Kodi Smit-McPhee and Kirsten Dunst in The Power of the Dog. Both Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley gave me chills in The Lost Daughter – there are quite literally too many exceptional talents to mention. Who blew you away this year?
