A good romantic comedy, movies like Pretty Woman, are always a real pleasure to watch. Starring two of the most watchable film stars ever in Julia Roberts and Richard Gere this is an unconventional take on the Cinderella (or should that be Cinde-f***ing-Rella) story. This was one of Roberts’ earliest roles and with the return of $450m showed she had that real star quality.
So have a look at our recommended movies like Pretty Woman, there should be something for eveyone here.
Maid in Manhattan (2002)
Marisa Ventura, a single mom working at a high-end hotel in Manhattan, finds love when she meets Christopher Marshal, a senatorial candidate at the hotel. However, trouble comes knocking soon after when Marshal realises that Marisa is a struggling single mom, not the wealthy socialite he thought she was. Will the two find a way to seal the gap between them and live happily ever after?
The Kindness of Strangers (2019)
When Clara leaves her abusive husband, she hopes to start a new life in New York with her two sons but soon finds out that living in the big city isn’t always easy. However she meets Alice who helps her get emergency accommodation. She then runs into Marc whilst stealing food from his restaurant, The Winter Palace. Whilst there is a clear spark between the two, this film is as much about the ensemble characters and their stories as it is about Clara and Marc.
No Strings Attached (2011)
This movie is a charging combination of a fairy tale and romance. Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman start their relationship as a no strings attached friendship, vowing never to fall in love. However, their relationship’s rule of not falling in love becomes hard to follow when they both fall in love with each other. The chemistry between the two and the movie’s twist uniquely presents everything we love in a romantic movie.
Untamed Heart (1993)
Caroline is a young waitress who starts a relationship with Adam, a workmate who fights off assailants who tried to attack her when on her way home. Given her history of having a terrible taste in men, the relationship starts to face challenges when she gets to know more about Adam’s past and his unique health condition.
Me Before You (2016)
“Me Before You” is a romantic story that will make you emotional from the beginning to the end. Warning! You will want to watch this with a box of tissues handy. After working several dead-end jobs, a nurse finally finds a job as a caretaker for a high-profile, successful man who has started using a wheelchair after an accident. Their relationship is riddled with challenges, thanks to their different backgrounds. However, the girl is determined to prove to him that life is still worth living, and as they start getting close to each other, each one finds their world changing in ways that they couldn’t imagine.
Runaway Bride (1999)
Just like Pretty Woman this is directed by Garry Marshall and stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere (putting the band back together!) Roberts plays Maggie Carpenter who gains notoriety in the tabloids for serially jilting her fiancées at the altar. Gere is a newspaper columnist tasked with writing an article on Maggie. Needless to say the chemistry between Roberts and Gere sparkles as it did in Pretty Woman in this thoroughly enjoyable movie.
Groundhog Day (1993)
Like Pretty Woman, Groundhog Day is one of those films that live long in memories, making them a point of reference when looking for an excellent movie to watch. They give some really useful cultural touchpoints and make you feel very old if you remember seeing them at their original release *coughs*. The movie is about Phil (played by Bill Murray), a weatherman who finds himself living the same day over and over again after covering the Groundhog Day celebration.
Since he is the only one who knows this is happening, he goes through periods of bitterness, dismay and despair until he gradually learns how to treat people decently and to make the most of this bizarre situation he finds himself trapped in. He also falls for producer Rita but given every day resets itself, it’s going to require a lot of effort to win her over.
Notting Hill (1999)
When you see Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant star in a movie, you will most likely expect more cuddling than talk, but the two go slow on that in this romantic comedy. Julia’s character (Anna) is a famous movie star, while Hugh plays William, the owner of a simple travel bookshop in London. Though you can easily spot that they are destined for each other from the start, you must go through the usual movie’s staff. The two meet at William’s bookshop, but there are several other meet cutes. Will the two find their happiness as a couple or are they just from far too different worlds?
There’s Something About Mary (1998)
Most people have love regrets, and for Ted (Ben Stiller), it is the prom date he missed in high school. It is now years after high school, but Ted is yet to get over Mary (Cameron Diaz) – the girl he was to go to prom with. Ted believes that the zipper accident that made him miss the prom denied him a chance to get into a perfect relationship. Thanks to Dom’s (Chris Elliot’s) advice, he decides to hire Healy, a private investigator, to help him find Mary so he can try winning her again. But can Healy resist her charm when he finally finds her?
Valentine’s Day (2010)
As its name suggests, this all-star cast is a one-stop destination for all types of lovers and favourite movie stars, including Julia Roberts and Taylor Swift. With a total of 21 actors, Valentine’s Day is about a series of relationships, from a fifth grader’s first crush to a girl who thinks a married man is in love with her and many more stories of the heart. Some will not work out, but others are close to perfect.
